What is a good night’s sleep?
A common misconception is that good sleep is a long deep valley of unconsciousness. Sleep is more like a roller coaster ride.
The amount of sleep an individual requires various from person to person and will also vary with age. The chart show that at birth babies need around 16 hours sleep, children around 10 hours, adolescents 9 hours and becomes shorter and lighter as a person ages.
The prevalence of insomnia and the use of sleeping pills is greater in the older population.

People are divided between Larks and Owls. Larks have a body clock set to early rising and early to bed while owls get to bed late and sleep in. Quite often either types try and beat their own body clock resulting in sleep problems.
There are three basic types of insomnia.
1. Sleep Maintenance Insomnia – difficulty maintaining sleep. In other words the experience of long or many night-time awakenings.
2. Sleep Onset Insomnia – difficulty falling asleep
3. Early Morning Awakening Insomnia – unable to fall back to sleep after an early
morning awakening.
